SOUL HUNTER

Perhaps the best part of owning this car is the potential of the engine. Equipped with the same 1.8 liter turbocharged 5 valve per cylinder engine, a simple aftermarket computer chip is enough to propel the car from the stock 150hp rating to over 200hp.

I started off modifying the engine by purchasing the APR 1.0bar chip/ECM. I purchased the additional ECM for warranty issues. Should something go wrong with the car, I can simply switch back to the stock ECM and avoid any issues with the dealer. The chip also came with a K&N filter, which I also installed. The performance from the chip is astounding. The first version of the chip would suddenly propel the car once the engine hit approximately 2300 rpms. Second gear goes by swiftly and third pulls even stronger. Fourth and fifth also provided superb passing power, with no need to downshift. I purchased the chip/ECM as part of a Vortex group deal for $599.00 directly from APR. I also added an aftermarket exhaust from GreedSpeed for $650.00. The exhaust is actually manufactured by Neuspeed and is a fully stainless steel unit from the downpipe back. The exhaust proved a little too loud for my taste, as it would emit an extremely loud resonance under any acceleration and even at cruising speeds. I have since added a small resonator which has brought the noise level down to a very pleasant, powerful note. I recently upgraded the APR chip to version 3.0 and the power is still very pleasant, and more linear. Power builds from 1st gear and keeps pulling all the way to redline. The exhaust really helps out here, as it allows the engine to really pull all the way to redline without dropping off.

I have since made arrangements to purchase a Garret/AWE k04 kit. This kit comes with a Garret K04 chip, a Triple K Warner K04 (KKK makes the K03 turbo which comes with the stock 1.8t Passat), Bosch spark plugs, and a Bosch 5.0bar Fuel Pressure Regulator. I will also be adding a 180 degree Thermostat, as well as a new set of gaskets. These modifications, along with the exhaust, should bring the power of the Passat, close to 250hp with approximately 265-275 lb feet of torque. I may later add a ported high flow manifold, but for now the above should work well. I decided against running a Stage III setup as 300hp seems a bit too much to channel through the front wheels of the Passat. The K04 kit starts at $1800.00 from AWE, however I am purchasing my kit from a private owner and will be paying less than the AWE price. Neuspeed also offers a K04 kit, which is priced at approximately $1600.00.

Pictures are forthcoming. For now, here is a pic of the K04 kit.
